Computational modeling of mineral unmixing and growth

چکیده

A new finite element based simulation technique for mineral growth governed by the classical Cahn–Hilliard equation is presented. The particular format of the underlying Flory–Huggins free energy for non-ideal mixtures is characterized through a double-well potential. It allows for uphill diffusion driven by gradients in the chemical potential and thus provides the appropriate framework to simulate phase separation typically encountered in mineral unmixing and growth. For the finite element discretization, the governing fourth order diffusion equation is reformulated in terms of a system of two coupled second order equations. For the temporal discretization, a heuristic adaptive time stepping scheme is applied in order to simulate not only the early stages of phase separation but also the long term behavior of ageing and grain fusion. The basic features of the Cahn–Hilliard equation are elaborated by means of selected geologically relevant examples. In particular, isotropic and anisotropic mineral growth and symplectite formation are studied and the long term response in the sense of Ostwald ripening is illustrated.

An Overview of Nonlinear Spectral Unmixing Methods in the Processing of Hyperspectral Data

The hyperspectral imagery provides images in hundreds of spectral bands within different wavelength regions. This technology has increasingly applied in different fields of earth sciences, such as minerals exploration, environmental monitoring, agriculture, urban science, and planetary remote sensing. However, despite the ability of these data to detect surface features, the measured spectrum i...

Integrating CRISM and TES hyperspectral data to characterize a halloysite-bearing deposit in Kashira crater, Mars

We present morphologic observations and spectral modeling results of a large, kaolin-group mineral-bearing deposit within Kashira crater in the southern highlands of Mars. We employ both non-linear unmixing of Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) visible to near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance data and linear unmixing of Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) thermal infrared (...

Statistical clustering and Mineral Spectral Unmixing in Aviris Hyperspectral Image of Cuprite, NV

Hyperspectral Imaging is a technique for obtaining a spectrum in each position of a large array of spatial positions so that a recognizable image is obtained at each of a set of discrete wavelengths. The images might be of a rock in the laboratory, a field study site from an aircraft or a rover camera, or a whole planet from a spacecraft or Earth-based telescope. By analyzing the spectral featu...
